5 Reasons You Should Try Zevia Zero-Cal Beverages

The beverage aisle is constantly growing, with most products comprising it touting less. Less calories, less chemical compounds you can’t begin to pronounce, less sodium, less sugar; the list goes on. When you buy drinks that have “less,” you often end up with an additional unexpected less: taste. Why does healthy seem forever entwined with flavorless? That doesn’t have to be the norm and Zevia represents tangible proof that healthy drinks can be tasty as hell. Here are five reasons to give Zevia a shot.

There’s A Drink For Every Beverage Category

The Los Angeles-based Zevia offers naturally sweetened beverages—thanks, stevia leaf—that are zero-sugar and zero-calories across every category: soda, energy, sparkling water, drink mixers, and organic tea. What more could you ask for? They’ve tackled big soda, with versions of more than a dozen popular sodas, including Mountain Zevia, Dr. Zevia and Cola. How do they stack up against the sugary originals? Pretty damn well. We tasted all fourteen flavors and there’s little difference. (It’s a little weird that all flavors are clear, until you realize all the color you’re drinking in conventional soda is artificial.)

All Beverages Are Compliant With Every Meal Plan

Whether you’re trying to avoid GMOs, or you’re vegan, or kosher, gluten-free, eating Keto or Paleo, each can of Zevia that you pick up will mesh well. If you go to any CrossFit box, you’re undoubtedly starting to see Zevia creeping in. This summer, in advance of the CrossFit games, two leading competitors—Katrin Davidsdottir, who won the women’s championship in 2015 and 2016, and Brent Fikowski, who placed second in the men’s championships in 2017—both starred in ads announcing Zevia’s partnership with the fitness movement. No matter how you’re eating, Zevia will fluidly dovetail into your diet.

It’s Made By An Athlete On A Mission

Zevia is helmed by Paddy Spence, a businessman who acquired the company several years back. But he’s not any typical CEO. Spence has more than 25 years of experience in the natural food industry, with erstwhile posts including Kashi’s first head of sales and marketing. Moreover, he’s completed more than 40 triathlons, and consistently trains in martial arts. Spence understands that your body needs premium fuel to achieve its maximum output and wants to provide healthier options to help people unlock their best potential.

Zevia Factors Into A Sugar Budget Philosophy

The American Heart Association recommends the average adult male eat only 37.5 grams of sugar per day. One can of Coca Cola contains 39 grams of sugar. What Zevia preaches is understanding how much sugar you’re ingesting and forming a sugar budget to encourage a healthy balance. Start, as the American Health Association offers, with a budget of 50 grams of sugar per day, which includes all sugars, not just added sugars. It’s easiest to cut out the added sugars, and then you can start to understand how much natural sugar is coming from sources like fruits and vegetables. Eventually, from there, you can step down to 37 grams, or about 9 teaspoons per day.

You Don’t Have To Budget Taste

Of the sodas we sampled, Orange, Grape, Cream Soda, Cherry Cola, and Ginger Ale tasted the best. A few of the others, like Mountain Zevia, had an interesting aftertaste, but it’s hard to replicate a bunch of sugary, chemical liquids naturally, right? The dry lemon-lime drink mixers were, as advertised, dry, but lightly-sweetened and helped along the likes of vodka and rum nicely. The ginger beer mixer helped craft a perfect Moscow Mule and you won’t notice the lack of sugars in your copper mug. The lime-flavored sparkling water nicely balances the citrus with just a hint of sweetness.
